Dealing with employees whose performance can only be rated as mediocre, is often frustrating for their managers. The employee might exhibit a perplexing lack of commitment even though the manager may have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to clarify the employee’s job expectations. In view of this contradiction a question imposes itself: Were the manager’s efforts spent in the most appropriate way? And the answer is: probably not; had the manager been acquainted with the art of coaching, her efforts would have probably yielded better results. She could have helped the employee discover and follow the most suitable path to complete the assigned tasks with a sense of ownership and commitment.
